On Wednesday evening, St Michael’s Church, Remuera, welcomed parishioners, young people, and members of the wider Dominican Family for An Evening with Pier Giorgio Frassati, a prayerful and inspiring reflection on the life of the Italian layman whose witness continues to inspire Catholics throughout the world. The evening brought together teaching, prayer, sacred music, silence, and Eucharistic adoration, inviting those present not only to learn about Frassati’s life but also to encounter Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, which was at the very centre of his spirituality. The keynote address was given by Fr Dominic Murphy OP, Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Drawing on his long-standing admiration for Frassati, Fr Dominic described him as “a man of the Beatitudes”, echoing the words of St John Paul II at Frassati’s beatification in 1990. Fr Dominic reflected on the many dimensions of Frassati’s life. Born into a prominent family in Turin, Italy, Pier Giorgio was an active and athletic young man who loved mountain climbing, skiing, laughter, and friendship. Yet beneath this outwardly ordinary life was a deep spiritual life centred on the Eucharist. From a young age he attended Mass frequently, spent time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and dedicated himself to serving those in need through the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
